BIRKWOOD

2009-08-30
Eatonfield have received the legal agreement from SLC. If both parties are in agreement with the content of this agreement, the development could soon be moving forward.

A final legal agreement as to the details of the conditions attached to the approval of the planning application is being developed by SLC Legal department; when this will be completed is not known.  Until the agreement is finalised then there will probably be little or no development on the site.

Conditional planning permission has been granted for the Birkwood development. (SLC Planning Committee Report)
An anouncement by the London Stock Exchange states;
"The original hospital, now a Grade B listed building, will be developed into an exclusive country house hotel. The phased development has consent for 165 houses and will potentially include sports/play facilities to be constructed in partnership with the Community Council."
"As potentially the most important project to be undertaken in Lesmahagow in recent years, this development will have a positive impact on the regeneration proposals for the village. Within the historic setting, it will create both high quality housing and an exclusive hotel which will generate employment."

As yet Eatonfield have had no news from SLC Planning, they are still hopeful of it coming before the SLC Planning Committee in February, although it is sitting in Roads Department at present – no doubt looking at the implications of traffic on New Trows Road.

Plans submitted by Eatonfield Plc are with South Lanarkshire Council [SLC], a decision is anticipated around February or March 2009. The plans include converting Birkwood House, a B listed building, into a 28 bedroom hotel with leisure facilities; also approximately 150 high-value residential homes, with the conversion of an existing separate ward into retirement homes. We sent an official response to SLC planning department confirming that we support the outline development application by Eatonfield, acknowledging that there would be increased traffic on New Trows Road. All we could suggest was that no further residential developments be allowed to the south that would put further stress on this road.

Eatonfield have indicated that if the plan goes through they’ll pull out all the stops to find an appropriate hotel organisation to tackle the development of Birkwood House. We now need to wait on the SLC planning process.

We have enjoyed an open and positive communication with Eatonfieldwith LCC with two of their directors travelling up from Wales specifically to attend a meeting with us.
